Righto, after a canceled road trip we decided to hit the Gordons Bay mountain this weekend. The weather prediction was abit extreme with bad weather and big swells, one word --> DANGEROUS!. The plan was to fish from Friday 17h00 until 17h00 Saturday.
Daiwa BG 50 packed, Poseidon Heavy packed, Daiwa Saltiga LD 50 packed, Poseidon Extra HEavy packed! Ready for war...so I thought....
Charl, Rean and myself started of at Vogelsteun at 17h00. It started off very slowelly, and the swell was getting bigger by the hour. We managed two tiny smoothounds and a Gurnard before dark, and things went dead quite. The waves was pounding against the mountain with immense power! Had the Poseidon Heavy and BG out at the time with a tiny 80lbs bite trace and a smallish frigate tuna bait. By this time Charl was snugged in and fast asleep in the back of the bakkie. I was finding a lekker spot on the rocks for a quick cat-nap, as i closed my eyes we just heard the screaming of the BG 50's rachet going off at the rate of knots!
This monster wasn’t stopping at all.. quick quick I was on my braid... and off goes the braid...nothing is stopping this thing…the BG 50 was getting warm, but this thing didnt care as the tighter I made the drag the faster it goes... I knew right there I was trouble now.. but the BG 50 kept on hanging... by this time the reel was really warm and my drum was approaching...told Rean this fish was not build for landing :) wasn’t long and BAMM the thing bit me off by my leader. oooooo DANKIE TOG !!!!
Yeah...now I thought ,now if is my time to get some rest in, by this time Rean's wife phoned as-well :) decided 3am we call it and rest abit as Rean needs to be at work by 9am.
It started to drizzle a bit... and then the rain came... getting cold and miserable... then Rean started to tell me freaking ghost stories, AI REAN WEE JY !!! hehe now I am getting scared and tired… thought righto lets go.... and then Jungle justice!!! ZZZzzzzzzzzz there goes Rean's Saltist... I knew, it was BIG TROUBLE, because Rean had a massive yellowtail head out! Ai jinne !!
This freakin monster sommer quick quick showed the braid on Rean's Saltist 50, and so it was game on! (luckily I quickly forgot about the ghost stories)
1ste hour gone! rean still hanging! by this time it was really POURING!! Rean was just HOU'IN VAS PAPIE !! for dear life! this monster was giving Rean a hiding of note, but Rean persisted...
2nd hour gone... rean still hanging... rain still pouring... 3 hours Rean freakin still hangs! and this monter wasnt showing any signs of tiredness at all! by this time Charl was up , after a good nights rest, and 'hy was so droog soos a kirk prop', hehe. Rean still hanging... now things must start to happen as Rean need to get to work…
Then all of the sudden this freakin monster fish decided, you know what I gave these bastards enough fun, and off it went, nonstop, all AROUND the flippen mountain… AROUND PEOPLE !!! and off is Reans line, to the side of the mountain!!! WOW !!!! all i can say is WOW !!!!
Right, now I am soaking wet, and freakin cold! but the viskoors is still dripping out of my ears! Rean went to work and Charl said lets go to another spot. We arrived at Bouy 4 on the mountain and was welcome by the biggest swells and sea I have ever seen! The sight and sound of those monster swells was so intimidating that I actually got so scared, BIG TIME!! To see those big swells move made my stomach turned! But we kept on on! Charl threw a tiny chokka bait into pure hell ! People it was not 10 seconds, pulled FLAT !!! It was the biggest freakin spotty I have ever seen with my navy blue eyes!!! It was a monster! 40+ kg if not bigger! When I saw that fish I really got scared… Charl told me leave it, its too big for the terrain and the waves too strong to land that thing and we cut the line.
By this time I was actually scared to throw any bait into the sea. Guess what? Not long and there goes Charl’s big rod…. AG NEE NIE WEER NIE! !!! Now this was the mother ! I was glad that it wasn’t me hehehe… Charl fought this thing like a pro! 1st hour gone…. Going into the second hour… 2nd hour gone! In the mean time I was praying for dear life, because I knew I had to help land whatever this is in the worst imaginable conditions. After making frantic calls to all anglers that we know for help, Anand and Darius came to the rescue ! After 3 hours the fish came close… It was a bleeep FREAKIN MASSIVE MONSTER OF A BLACK PYLIE !!! AG NEE DAMMIT MAN !!!! Hey?? How can this be?? The meanest fish, on the meanest terrain , in the meanest of swell… this was just too much for my tiny heart! It looked like Charl was in shower as the sweet drips off him, meanwhile I thought to myself (ag dankie Vader dis nie ek nie!!!)
Charl made a decision that this fish (even though a record of note) is not worth anyone’s life and pulled it off. That fish was way above 200+ kg!! CRAZY CRAZY INSANE STUFF!!!
Its now 15h00, im so tired, and scared like a tiny a little kid that watched a Child’s Play movie… Charl told me to use the Saltiga 50 LD with Poseidon Extra Heavy and I told him “ Asb nee Charl ek is regtig bang my ou..” hehe… guess what? he baited up for me… big bait again… OH NO !!! 15h30… ZZZZzzzz
AG NEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!! Picked up the rod and slack line…. YEAH!!! It must have bit my sinker off and left me alone!! Yeah!!! BUT… as soon as I reeled in…VAS !!!! O bleep !!!!! Here we go AGAIN!!! … well needless to say, another monster! But this thing wasn’t taking any nonsense!!! DROM toe papa!!! And around the mountain it went…. And OFF YEAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hehe lost about a 100m of braid on that one!!
I have no photos to show, only awesome experience gained and one of the best weekends I had in along time with awesome friends!!!
Things I have learned:
· Never under estimate the sea and what lies beneath…
· Sleep and rest to be ready and sharp for the next session…
· Trust your tackle!!! Daiwa BG 50 + Poseidon heavy, Daiwa Saltiga LD 50 + Poseidon Extra Heavy was up for the challenge!!! BRILLIANT !!! Big fish, extreme weather! And guess what? The BG’s pinion gear is still in my reel and as strong as a OX !!!
Gaitor 48lbs braid is REALLY REALLY STRONG !!!
· BE PREPARED FOR ANYTHING !!!
